چکیده

In order to serve the needs of the emerging services and applications, the UMTS authority of standardization (3GPP) introduces at its fifth release of standardization the IP multimedia subsystem (IMS). Also, for the enhanced services (IMS), a policy management approach is exerted which integrates a policy-based admission control. Nevertheless, as currently defined in 3GPP, the aspects of ‘‘policy’’ and ‘‘resources’ availability’’ are prone to improvements. This paper presents a diagram of operation and an admission control mechanism for the packet-switched domain of the UMTS core network. Both rely upon policies and measurements and serve the needs of QoS. In order to attest the quality of our solution, we carried out a series of simulations on OPNET. The results illustrate the compromise offered by our solution in terms of QoS and utilization and show the importance of the conditioning mechanisms. 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Signaling Measurements on the Packet Domain of 3G-UMTS Core Network

There is significant signaling message activity in Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems (UMTS) among Core Network (CN) elements for the mobility management of UMTS subscribers. The time-overhead introduced with the performance of these signaling operations is a crucial factor that determines the overall performance of UMTS technology and affects greatly the application Quality of Service ...

An Analysis of Traffic and Throughput for UMTS Packet Core Networks

Mobile packet services are penetrating mobile markets rapidly. The mobile industry relies heavily on data services to replace traditional voice services. Designing a reliable packet service network is critical to the mobile operators’ ability to maintain their core competence in a data service market. The current literature provides many practical tools and theoretical methods to design, plan a...

Future Core Networks System (fcns) – a Secure Signalling Protocol Stack for the Umts Core Network

In this paper we present the security features of a novel protocol stack designed for carrying signalling information in the UMTS Core Network (CN) and more specifically for its Packet Switched domain. We compare its features with proposed protocols by the Internet and Telecommunications Community, such as the IPsec and Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) architectures, moving on to ana...

SIP as a unified signalling solution in a beyond 3G system

The adoption of packet-switched technologies in mobile communication systems has enabled the provision of IPbased services to mobile users. Yet, these systems, such as the UMTS network, are unable to meet the stringent delay requirements imposed by the enhanced multimedia services due to the anchor point that introduce into the user’s data path. Moreover, such applications will rely on IP-based...

Policy Model for Sharing Network Slices in 5G Core Network

As mobile data traffic increases, and the number of services provided by the mobile network increases, service load flows as well, which requires changing in the principles, models, and strategies for media transmission streams serving to guarantee the given nature of giving a wide scope of services in Flexible and cost-effective. Right now, the fundamental question remains what number of netwo...
